RMI Powers Fujitsu’s LTE (Long Term Evolution) Wireless Mobile Solution with its
Multi-core Multi-threaded XLR Processor
RMI’s Multi-Core Multi-Threaded Processor accelerates packet-oriented applications essential for
Fujitsu’s LTE BASE STATION Infrastructure Product
Cupertino, CA, and Tokyo, Japan, August 28, 2008 — RMI Corporation, a leading
supplier of multi-core, multi-threaded processors for communications and media rich
applications, today announced that Fujitsu Limited, a leading telecommunication
equipment supplier, has selected RMI’s Multi-core Multi-threaded XLR™ Processor for
Fujitsu’s LTE Base Station product.
Fujitsu’s LTE Base Station will be utilized by large telecommunications carriers to meet
the growing needs of wireless connectivity. The LTE Base Station from Fujitsu utilizes
the XLR Processor™ which incorporates an innovative set of XLR cores enabling
multiple threads, or virtual CPUs (vCPUs™), in a single chip.
“The XLR Processor’s capabilities and the performance levels give us the necessary
performance for our LTE system, said Katsuhiko Tanahashi, General Manager, Mobile
Systems Unit at Fujitsu. “This performance matched with the ease of programmability
enables us to deliver a very robust infrastructure system to our customers.”
“By working with Fujitsu, we are able to fully demonstrate the features and the
performance of the XLR Processor while matching what Fujitsu and its customers
require for its LTE product,” said Sunny Siu, president, RMI Asia. “This agreement with
Fujitsu underscores our focus and success in the telecom infrastructure market and we
are happy to be working together on this important program.”
The XLR architecture is built around two to eight XLR processor-enhanced MIPS64®
compatible cores, implementing fine-grained, 4-way multithreading, combined with a
multi-level hierarchy of caches, autonomous accelerators, and point-to-point
interconnects for data and message transfers. The interconnects’ full-speed operation
augments application scalability and tightly integrates the high performance main
memory controllers, level-2 caches, 10Gbps accelerated security operations, and
accelerated networking interfaces to deliver a processing solution running at frequencies
of 800MHz to 1.2GHz optimized for maximum throughput and workload efficiency.
RMI’s multi-core multi-threaded processors provide a rich set of features and
performance levels to address the wide variety of integrated next generation applications,
including integrated security, Web services, virtualized storage, load balancing, server
offload and intelligent routing and switching systems. The XLR700 and XLR500
Processor series are software and hardware compatible and each processor is available
in a variety of power options including standard, low and ultra low power. The XLS
Processor™ family consists of cost-effective devices for embedded communication and
networking, SMB and client oriented solutions. These solutions include integrated
security, access points, routers and switch products. Each RMI Processor within its
series is software and hardware compatible, and the XLS™ 600, 400, and 200 series
processors are software compatible.
